As the cost-of-living crisis bites, the local charity, Citizens Advice New Forest, has seen a huge number of inquiries from local people struggling to stay on top of household bills.

Thanks to the tireless dedication of its volunteers and staff, Citizens Advice New Forest has continued to give essential advice and crisis support to help people find a way forward.

However, vital funds are needed to recruit and train more volunteers. On average, in Hampshire & IOW, it costs £970 a year to recruit and train a volunteer adviser. In contrast our financial modelling tool shows that in 2021/22 the total value of Citizens Advice volunteers to Hants & IOW was £4.8 million. As part of Volunteers’ Week, which runs from 1 to 7 June 2022, Citizens Advice New Forest is calling for local businesses and individuals to sponsor a volunteer by donating as much as they can.

In the last year, Citizens Advice helped 6539 people with 17,961of problems, such as debt, housing, benefit and employment issues.

Ian Evans, Volunteer Adviser at Citizens Advice New Forest has volunteered since 2016 when he retired from a career in banking, where he helped people in debt.  He describes his volunteering as ‘busy but rewarding’. It is good to be able to use your life experience to help other people. It’s a great team and I would really recommend it.’

Sallie Southam, Volunteer Training Manager at Citizens Advice New Forest said:

“We have an incredible team of volunteers who freely give their time and skills to ensure people in the New Forest can get support in their time of need.

“I’m particularly proud of the immense dedication they’ve shown during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, when demand for our help is so high.

“As a charity, we desperately need donations to recruit and train more volunteer advisers to help us to help more people in our local community. Please consider donating what you can to sponsor a volunteer.’
