Ear wax is made up of oil, dead skin cells and other debris. This ear wax buildup can cause problems for your ears and your hearing.

You should always have your ears checked by a doctor if you have problems with wax build up in your ears.

1. Earwax is usually white or yellowish in color. It is formed from oils that are secreted by the skin cells around the ear canal.

2. When there is too much earwax it can cause an ear infection called otitis externa (or more commonly known as swimmer’s ear). If you get this condition, your ear will be red, swollen, itchy and painful. You may also hear a popping noise when you shake your head.

3. There are many ways to remove ear wax. The most common is to use cotton swabs dipped in warm water and then gently cleaning the ear. Another way is to use a cotton swab dipped in mineral oil. A third way is to use a commercial ear cleaning product. These products are available over the counter at your local drugstore. They contain chemicals that dissolve ear wax.

4. If you do not want to use these products you can buy an ear cleaning kit online. These kits usually contain a small syringe with a long tube attached. You insert the tube into your ear canal and squeeze the syringe to force out the wax. This method can be very painful because it uses pressure to remove the wax.

5. If you have a severe case of earwax buildup, you may need to see a doctor. This condition is called otosclerosis. It is a rare disease that affects the middle ear bones. In this condition the bones become abnormally thick and hard. The doctor may recommend surgery to break the bones and allow the wax to flow out.
